Vols Finish 14th at Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. -- The Tennessee men's golf team concluded play in 14th place at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational with a scorecard of 295-290-308--893, finishing one stroke back of 22nd-ranked North Carolina. The tournament, which featured some of the nation's top teams, was held at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72, 6,945 yards).
Junior David Skinns led the Big Orange, tying for 17th with a 73-72-73--218. Skinns opened the final round on the back nine with consecutive pars, followed by a birdie on 12 and a bogey on 13. He would record two more bogeys on 15 and 17 before making the turn at 2-over-par. Skinns would return to 1-over-par on the third hole before making another bogey on four. The England native would record a final birdie on seven before two pars to end the round at 1-over-par.
Second in UT scoring was John Scott Rattan. Rattan, a junior, turned in a 74-72-74--220 to tie for 25th place. He began the third round on the 10th hole with a par before bogeying 11. Rattan then made three-straight pars, followed by another bogey and three more pars to make the turn at 2-over-par. The final nine holes was more of a see-saw for Rattan, as he birdied holes two and seven, but had three bogeys on three, five and eight.
Freshman Tino Weiss was next for the Vols, tying for 54th with a 76-73-78--227. Weiss began the round with three pars before back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14 that took him to 2-over-par. From there he would make par on the final four holes, going to the front nine at 2-over-par. Weiss struggled the remainder of the round with four bogeys on holes one, two, four and nine to finish with a 78.
Ross McGowan finished fourth in UT scoring with a 72-73-83--229, tying him for 58th. McGowan, a junior, was unable to get on track, opening play with a double-bogey on 10, a bogey on 11 and a triple-bogey on 12, followed by a second bogey on 14. He recorded two more bogeys on 15 and 17 before a birdie on 18. The back nine saw McGowan record three more bogeys on two, five and seven to conclude the round.
Freshman Jonathan Mount, who entered the round tied for 71st with a 78-78--156 withdrew from the final round of play.
The top-ranked Florida Gators won the team championship with a scorecard of 280-290-289--859. No. 3 Georgia finished 10 strokes back in second with a 289-286-294--871, while No. 14 South Carolina rounded out the top three with a 292-282-297--871.
Other Golfweek Top 25 teams that completed play include No. 15 Augusta State (876) in fifth, No. 2 Clemson (878) in sixth, No. 12 Southern California (881) and No. 19 Wake Forest (881) tied for eight and No. 22 North Carolina (892) in 13th.
Matt Every made it a sweep for Florida, winning the individual title with a 67-72-68--207. Bill Haas of Wake Forest finished second with a 209, while Chris Kirk of Georgia (212) and Nathan Smith (213) of Duke finished third and fourth, respectively.
The Vols close out regular season play, April 9-10 at The Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. UT competed in this tournament last season, finishing fifth with a scorecard of 284-285-286--855.
