Established in 1939, the Athletic Communications unit is a multi-disciplined team dedicated to sharing the story of the University of Tennessee’s 20 intercollegiate sports programs—featuring more than 500 student-athletes—in a compelling, accurate and timely fashion.
Â
Tennessee Athletic Communications consists of two uniquely specialized departments: Strategic Communications and 151 Creative. These units collaborate daily and are housed on the ground floor of the Anderson Training Center.
Â
The office of Strategic Communications operates as a liaison between Tennessee’s athletic programs and all external media outlets. Our staff services and assists the media, coordinates interviews, conducts press conferences, produces all departmental publications, compiles statistics, serves as the archivists and historians of Tennessee Athletics and maintains the university’s official athletics website, UTsports.com.
Â
Comprised of some of the nation’s most talented graphic designers, photographers and social media strategists, the 151 Creative team serves as an in-house agency that strives collectively to conceptualize, cultivate and curate the visual identity of Tennessee Athletics. Alongside our colleagues at VFL Films—the Vols’ acclaimed and pioneering video production unit—151 Creative tells Tennessee’s unique story across a variety of mediums, both digital and tangible. From the social media feed being scrolled in one hand to the game ticket or program being held in the other, 151 Creative works to directly engage our passionate fan base while simultaneously delivering UT’s distinctive brand and feel to a national audience.
Â
151 Creative employs two full-time photographers and a staff of student interns who work out of our full-service, in-house photo studio. A longstanding partnership with Canon ensures that our photographers can reliably capture world-class imagery with state-of-the-art equipment.
Â
Our award-winning graphic design team—consisting of three full-time artists, one graduate assistant and a staff of student interns—designs custom imagery for game tickets, posters, website and recruiting graphics, UT’s extensive social media inventory, special events and much more. Their work also adorns the many walls and halls of Tennessee’s athletic facilities.
Â
The 151 Creative social media staff manages a department-wide inventory that includes more than 45 accounts across four primary platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok and Facebook. This team works with each sport to tailor and coordinate the strategic deployment of timely and engaging content.
