#18 Vols Fall to #21 Gamecocks, 4-3
April 03, 2025 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 18 Tennessee men's tennis team fell just short of 21st-ranked South Carolina, 4-3, on Thursday evening at Carolina Tennis Center.
Tennessee (16-6, 7-4 SEC) could not create any momentum throughout the early portion of the match and dropped the doubles point to South Carolina (15-6, 9-3 SEC). The Gamecocks picked up wins on courts two and three to gain an early 1-0 lead over the Vols.
In singles play, Tennessee earned a trio of first-set victories that would carry the momentum and win their courts in straight sets. Alejandro Moreno struck first, earning a ranked win over No. 98 Sean Daryabeigi. Ian Cruz followed, taking down Gabe Avram, 6-2, 6-3. No. 31 Shunsuke Mitsui posted the final point on the day for the Vols, as he narrowed the match up, 3-3, with a 6-4, 6-3 showing against Lucas da Silva.
However, South Carolina won just enough courts to take home the match. After securing a pair of singles victories throughout the match, the deciding match came down to court four, as Jose Garcia battled Atakan Karahan. The freshman narrowly dropped the court in two sets, as the Gamecocks earned a 7-5, 6-4 triumph to grab a 4-3 ledger.
