#16 Vols Suffer Defeat to #26 Mississippi State, 4-3

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 16th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team dropped a home match against No. 26 Mississippi State, 4-3, on Saturday night at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
UT (9-3) was unable to create any momentum early on and dropped the doubles point to Mississippi State (11-1). The Bulldogs earned their victories on courts one and three to jump out to a 1-0 advantage in the match. Mitsui and Alan Jesudason were up against No. 29 Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano, 5-4, before their match went unfinished.
In singles, Mississippi State quickly earned a pair of victories on courts four and six to bring them within one point of clinching the match. The Vols showed some resilience, as No. 16 Shunsuke Mitsui defeated No. 67 Petar Jovanovic, 7-6(4), 6-2 to give Tennessee a glimmer of momentum.
However, the Bulldogs found their clincher on court five. In an intense three-set battle, No. 85 Martinez Serrano edged out No. 95 Alejandro Moreno, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to secure the match in favor of Mississippi State.
The remaining matches were played out, and the Big Orange saw two victories to narrow the final scoring. No. 31 Alex Kotzen rallied to earn a three-set win over No. 65 Benito Sanchez Martinez, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, and Jose Garcia did the same with a 6(5)-7, 6-3, 7-5 showing over Dusan Milanovic to bring the ending ledger to 4-3.
