CARY, N.C. - Tennessee fired a four-under-par 284 in Saturday's final round at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate to finish in seventh-place. Saturday's round continued UT's improvement from the first two rounds that saw the Vols shoot 299-289 in Friday's first two rounds at MacGregor Downs Country Club (par 72, 6,867 yards).
David Skinns led the Volunteer contingent, tying for 12th. Skinns, who fired a 71-72 on the opening day, matched his second round effort with another even-par 72 to finish with a three-round total of 215 (1-under-par).
Ross McGowan put together another solid round with a 70. McGowan shot a 77-72 during the first two rounds to go with the 70 for a total of 219, tying him for 25th.
John Scott Rattan finished one stroke back of McGowan in a tie for 30th. Rattan bettered his play with each round, as he fired an even-par 72 in the third round to go with a 75-73 for a total of 220.
Ross Cox and Tino Weiss rounded out the Tennessee scores. Cox finished tied for 34th, while Weiss ended in a tie for 55th. The tournament saw Cox fire a 76-72-73--221, while Weiss recorded his lowest round as a Vol with a 70 to go with an 80-75 for a 225.
The 23rd-ranked Duke Blue Devils claimed top team honors with a 280-285-280--845, winning the tournament by 15 strokes over No. 25 Kansas (283-279-298--860). Rounding out the top five teams were No. 11 Minnesota (862) in third, host North Carolina State (867) in fourth and Southern Methodist (870) in fifth.
Bill Haas of Wake Forest claimed the individual title with a 64-69-68--201. Finishing seven strokes back in second was Aron Price of Georgia Southern with a 69-67-72--208.
Tennessee now turns its attention to post season play and the SEC Championships, April 16-18. The tournament will once again be held at the Seaside Course in Sea Island, Ga. Last season, the Vols entered the final round of play in a tie for first place, finishing the tournament in fourth with a 289-288-293--870. Andrew Pratt led UT with a 72-69-70--211 to finish fourth.
