Tennessee Finishes Eighth at Cleveland Golf Collegiate Classic

LOS ANGELES - Tennessee concluded play at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Classic in eighth place with a scorecard of 279-303-294--876. The tournament was played at North Ranch Country Club (par 71, 6,900 yards).
Leading the way for the 24th-ranked Vols was Ross McGowan, finishing tied for 14th. McGowan carded a 69-74-73--216. Play began on the seventh hole with a par, followed by a bogey on eight. The 10th hole saw McGowan record a birdie, followed by a bogey on 11 and another birdie on 12 to return to even par. He closed out the first nine holes with a bogey to make the turn at 1-over-par. The 18th hole saw McGowan record another bogey before consecutive pars and another bogey on three. He would then recover to score a birdie on five and a par on six to end with a 73.
Next for UT was junior David Skinns. Skinns ended play with scores of 70-76-72--218, tying him for 22nd. The final round saw him begin play on the sixth hole with a par, followed by a birdie on seven. From there he would par the next four holes before back-to-back bogeys brought his score to 1-over-par. A birdie on 15 brought him back to even-par heading into the final nine holes. A birdie on 16 and back-to-back bogeys on 18 and one pushed his score to one over. Skinns would then make par to end the round with a 1-over-par 72.
Freshman Jonathan Mount was third in UT scoring, with a tie for 43rd after carding a 72-79-73--224. Mount opened the final round on the ninth hole with a birdie. He would bogey 10, followed by four pars and a birdie on 15 to go 1-under-par. Entering the final nine holes at 1-under, Mount bogeyed 18, as well as holes two and three. A birdie on four was followed by another bogey on five to end the tournament's final round with a 73.
Rounding out the Vol scoring was sophomore Lloyd Campbell and junior John Scott Rattan. Campbell finished tied for 51st with a 68-77-80--225, while Rattan shot a 77-76-76--229 to end play tied for 64th.
The 14th-ranked Texas Longhorns swept the team and individual top honors. As a team, Texas fired a 281-278-288--847 to win by 15 strokes over host Southern California (283-286-293--862). Sixth-ranked Texas Christian and 20th-ranked Brigham Young finished tied for third with scores of 872, while No. 16 California finished fifth with an 874.
Other Golfweek Top 25 teams who competed were No. 8 Arizona State (875) and No. 3 UCLA (875) in a tie for sixth, No. 25 Washington (892) in 13th and No. 13 Arkansas (895) finished 14th.
Texas' Matthew Rosenfeld won the individual title with a 67-68-73--208. Jeff Bell and Jason Hartwick, also of Texas, along with Peter Tomasulo of California finished tied for second with scores of 209.
The Vols return to action, March 8-9, at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La. The Vols claimed the tournament title at their last appearance in this tournament in 2001, which will be played Oakbourne Country Club.
