Vols Finish Third at the Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C.--The Tennessee men's golf team wrapped up the 2003 fall portion of its schedule with a third place finish at the Landfall Tradition. The Vols finished the tournament, which was played at the Landfall Country Club's Jack Nicklaus Course (par 72, 6,973 yards), with a scorecard of 296-291-281--868.
Junior John Scott Rattan recorded his highest finish as a Vol in a tie for third with Chris Noel of Tulsa. Rattan carded a 69-71-71--211. His highest finish prior to this tournament was in 2002 at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, finishing tied for fifth.
Freshman Jonathan Mount finished tied for 15th after shooting a final round score of 70 to go with his previous two rounds of 74-73 for a total of 217. Finishing one stroke back of Mount was junior David Skinns. Skinns turned in the team's lowest round of the day, a 68, for a three-round total of 218.
Junior Ross McGowan was next for UT in a tie for 30th with a scorecard of 77-73-72--222. Fellow junior Brandon Skeen rounded out the Vol scoring with an 81-76-77--234, finishing tied for 58th.
The 12th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers claimed the team championship with a scorecard of 284-287-280--851. The 2002 National Champions won the tournament by 15 strokes over Big 10 rival Ohio State, who had a 286-290-290--866. Following the thirdplace Volunteers was host UNC Wilmington in fourth with an 868 and Penn State in fifth with an 871.
Justin Smith made it a tournament sweep for Minnesota by claiming medalist honors in the individual portion of the tournament with a 69-74-65--208. Teammate Ryan Paulson finished second with a 70-68-72--210, followed by Rattan and Chris Noel of Tulsa with scores of 211. Bronson La Cassie of Minnesota rounded out the top five in fifth with a 71-69-72--212.
The Vols concluded the fall portion of their schedule with a record of 36-23-1 (.608). They open the 2004 spring schedule on Jan.31-Feb. 1 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
