#13 Vols Secure Pair of Sweeps Over Tennessee Tech and Belmont

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 13 Tennessee men's tennis team posted two victories to open its season on Monday at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee (2-0) defeated Tennessee Tech (0-2) by a score of 7-0 to earn its first victory of the season in the morning slate. Later in the day, the Vols took down Belmont (0-1) with a 7-0 decision to earn their second in-state win for the day.
MATCH 1: Tennessee 7, Tennessee Tech 0
Shunsuke Mitsui and James Newton, the two returners on this year's squad, opened the match by defeating Tennessee Tech's Oliver Dao and Lucas Bitzer, 6-1. Alan Jesudason and Jan Kobierski followed suit, earning a victory against Alex Alvarez and Murilo Burckhardt, 6-1. Ian Cruz and Jose Garcia were trailing Darek Kuczynski and Lukas Krause, 4-3, before the match went unfinished.
Newton and No. 18 Mitsui got the Vols started in singles play, each tallying 6-1, 6-1 victories, with Newton defeating Ricard Yepez and Mitsui besting Burckhardt. Garcia was next to finish his respective match, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Dao to clinch the win for the Vols.
Cruz extended UT's lead to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Kuczynski. Kobierski earned his first singles win as a Vol with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 victory over Bitzer. Jesudason closed things out with a three-set win over Alvarez, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
MATCH 2: Tennessee 7, Belmont 0
In the afternoon slate, the Vols quickly secured the doubles point to earn an early 1-0 lead over the Bruins. No. 59 Mitsui and Jesudason topped Stefan Vedovelli and Esteban Ortiz, 6-2, while Garcia and Cruz bested Diego Castro and Niklas von Hellens, 6-0. Newton and Kobierski were up against Esunge Ndumbe and Charlie Robin, 5-2, before the match went unfinished.
Singles action saw similar dominance for the Big Orange, as UT's first win came with a emphatic 6-0, 6-1 showing from Garcia against Castro. Kobierski was impressive yet again, gliding his way to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Robin. Cruz was able to earn a win over his former team, fighting past Hellens 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the match. No. 18 Mitsui eased his way with another impressive showing, defeating Ndumbe 6-4, 6-2.
Closing out the day, Jesudason and Newton each battled out tough three-set victories. The first came from Jesudason, as the senior earned a win over Sabi Roi, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Newton gained his second victory on court six for the day with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 showing against Vedovelli.
DOMINANT DEBUTS
A quartet of Vols made their spring debuts during the first two matches of the season. Alan Jesudason, Ian Cruz, Jose Garcia and Jan Kobierski saw action on the courts today, with each individual winning every singles or doubles match they participated in on the day.
UP NEXT
The Vols are set to go up against another in-state foe later this week, heading west to play MTSU on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. ET at the Adams Tennis Complex.
