No. 20 Lady Vols Sweep Indiana, 4-0
February 09, 2020 | Women's Tennis
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 20th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team earned its third sweep of the season Sunday with a 4-0 win over Indiana at the IU Tennis Center.
"This has been a good weekend for our Lady Vols," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We learned a lot on Friday, practiced those specifics on Saturday and came out today and executed them. Our program is improving everyday and we are a fun team to watch compete."
The Lady Vols (5-1) continued their doubles win streak against the Hoosiers, winning the point with victories on courts two and three. Carly Briggs and Ariadna Riley defeated Michelle McKamey and Mila Mejic 6-2 on three before Rebeka Mertena and Johanna Silva clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Alexandra Staiculesc and Caitlin Bernard at No. 2.
No. 11 Tenika McGiffin and Kaitlin Staines were up 4-3 on Annabelle Andrinopou and Jelly Bozovic on court one when the doubles point was clinched. Their match went unfinished.
Ojeda has stressed the importance of starting fast and winning the doubles point, something the Lady Vols have done extremely well through their first six dual matches this season.
"We have done a great job starting off matches with energy and determination," Ojeda said. "When we focus on those two tasks, we give ourselves a great chance to win the doubles point."
In singles, Briggs was the first Lady Vol off the court with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Staiculescu on court three. The freshman from Calhoun, Ga., went 4-0 on the weekend with two wins in doubles and two wins in singles. Briggs is now a combined 12-0 this season in singles and doubles.
"This past weekend was a true testament to the hard work our team has put into each and every practice," Briggs said. "Today, we came out and competed from start to finish and took care of business. We're excited for what the rest of the season holds and we can't wait to be back home and in front of our incredible fans."
No. 70 Staines picked up a win at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Bernard before No. 59 Silva clinched the match on court four with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Bozovic.
Tennessee and Indiana did not play out the remaining matches.
