Lady Vols Sweep Valentine’s Day Doubleheader

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 22/22-ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team defeated UT Martin and Marquette to sweep their Valentine's Day doubleheader inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee (7-1) started off the day with a 4-0 win over UT Martin (1-4), immediately followed by a 5-2 win over Marquette (1-4) to stay perfect on the day.
The Lady Vols started fast, taking the doubles point in both matches. UT has yet to surrender a doubles point in 2020.
Against UT Martin, the Big Orange claimed all three doubles matches. The pair of Johanna Silva and Hadley Doyle got the day started with a 6-1 win on court three over Sina Albersmeier and Jule Streif. Kaitlin Staines and Julie Ball defeated Daphne Pratt and Amelia Campbell 6-2 on court one to give UT the doubles point. Shortly after on court two, Ariadna Riley and Carly Briggs took down Aziza Aubin and Mizuki Sakurai 6-3.
To close the day against Marquette, UT won the doubles point in a split decision. The duo of Staines and Callie Creath defeated Milica Novakovic and Tiana Windbuchler 6-2 on court two. UT dropped a match on court one. On court three, Silva and Doyle defeated Elisabeth Desmarais and Giulia Turconi 6-4 to give the Lady Vols a 1-0 lead against Marquette.
"Overall, Carly Briggs is outstanding," said head coach Alison Ojeda. "She is just relentless every single point she plays. It is pretty impressive."
Briggs, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Week, won both of her matches on court two in straight sets, scoring the opening singles point in both duals. To start the day, she took down UT Martin's Campbell 6-1, 6-0. Briggs defeated Marquette's Milica Novakovic 6-1, 6-2. Briggs begins her collegiate dual-match career a perfect 8-0 in singles.
Silva went undefeated on court three, winning both of her matches in straight sets. She opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over UT Martin's Streif to clinch the match for the Lady Vols. She followed with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Marquette's Natalija Popovic.
On court four, Doyle also went undefeated in singles play and won her matches in straight sets. The freshman got her Valentine's Day started with a 6-1, 6-4 win over UT Martin's Aubin. She clinched the dual against Marquette with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Turconi.
Riley, in her first singles match since October, defeated Marquette's Isabella Franks 6-4, 6-0.
Up next, the Lady Vols host Cincinnati and UT Chattanooga for a doubleheader inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 21. First serve against the Bearcats is at 9:30 a.m. ET and 12:30 p.m. ET against the Mocs.
