WTEN CENTRAL: Lady Vols Open Fall Slate with Furman Invitational
September 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –The Tennessee women's tennis team is set to compete in its first tournament of the fall at the three-day Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic beginning on Friday. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. ET on all three days.Â
Â
"I think Furman is always an exciting tournament," said head coach Alison Ojeda. "We've been playing it since I was in school in 1998. You've got a group of probably 10 to 14 really good schools who bring some of their better players. So, no matter what, you're guaranteed an opportunity to compete all weekend long. That's really good for us as well as for most of the schools going. It's the first competition of the fall, so it is time to go out and compete this weekend, see where we're at and then make some adjustments."
Â
Furman, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ohio State, South Carolina, Texas, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest are all slated to compete this weekend.Â
Â
Making the trip to Furman, S.C. for the Lady Vols is Lyric Bonilla, Callie Creath, Kylie Duckworth, Tenika McGiffin, Rebeka Mertena, Ariadna Riley, Gabby Schuck, Johanna Silva, and Kaitlin Staines.
Â
In the Rankings
Three Lady Vols got the nod in the ITA's preseason national rankings. The duo of McGiffin and Staines were listed as the No. 24 preseason doubles pair. In singles, Staines came in ranked No. 89 and Mertena was listed as the No. 120 individual.Â
