LSU Tops Tennessee, 73-55, In Hoops

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- LSU handed Tennessee a 73-55 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Tigers shot 53.2 from the floor for the game including making 9-of-19 from 3-point range. LSU shot 64 percent in the first half, making 7-of-10 from 3-point range to put the game out of reach.
LSU improved to 18-7 overall and 7-5 in the SEC. Tennessee is now 14-10 overall and 6-6 in league play.
LSU's Jordan Mickey, who came into the game averaging a double-double (17.0 ppg and 10.8 rpg) finished with 20 points and 11 boards. Keith Hornsby tallied 16 points as he made four 3-point range. Tim Quarterman added 13 points.
The Vols were led by Armani Moore, who had 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Josh Richardson netted 15 points and Derek Reese added 11.
The Vols saw their six-game winning streak vs. LSU, dating to 2010, come to an end. The Tigers' last win over Tennessee came on Jan. 28, 2009, 79-73 in Knoxville.
LSU opened the game scoring the first seven points of the contest and never looked back. The Tigers led by double-figures for the final 31 minutes of the game.
The Tigers used a 15-2 run midway through the first half to build a 26-10 lead with 8:48 left in the half. Hornsby connected on three 3-pointers in the game's first 10 minutes to spur the Tigers' early-game surge.
LSU held a 47-20 lead at halftime thanks to 64.0 shooting from the floor including 70.0 from 3-point range (7-of-10). Mickey had 15 first-half points while Hornsby netted 11.
Down 27 at halftime, the Vols came out strong in the second half and used a 13-0 run to cut their deficit to 15 points at 48-33 in the first four minutes of the half.
The Vols continued to battle, but were never able to get its deficit under 15 points for the remainder of the afternoon. On five different occasions, Tennessee cut its deficit to 15 points over the final 20 minutes, but was never able to get any closer.
Tennessee outscored LSU, 35-26 in the second half.
Tennessee now leads the all-time series, 62-44, including 29-17 in Knoxville.
