Tennessee raced to an early lead, saw it evaporate and settled into a second-place tie Friday after one round at the SEC Men's Golf Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga.
The Vols simply weren't able to hold their advantage over the last nine holes at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course. After scoring six birdies on the front nine against only one bogey among the entire five-man lineup, Tennessee saddled itself with 10 bogeys, four doubles and a triple to more than offset six more birdies.
The result left UT at 6-over-par 286, one stroke behind leader Florida at 285. Arkansas also carded a 286 to tie Tennessee, followed by Alabama's 291 in fourth and a three-way tie of Auburn, Georgia and LSU at 292 for fifth place.
Robin Wingardh opened with a 1-under-par 69 to lead the Big Orange and push Wingardh into a tie for second on the individual leaderboard. Danny Keddie added a 71 to tie for eighth, while Darren Renwick and Jay Vandeventer had matching 73s to tie for 21st. Garrick Porteous shot 74 and is tied for 27th place.
Wingardh was 3 under par through 13 holes thanks to birdies at the first, seventh and 11th holes. But those efforts were wiped away when the senior captain tripled the 442-yard, par-4 14th. A birdie at the par-3 17th hole pulled Wingardh back into red figures at 69 and he trails first-day leader John Peterson of LSU by just one stroke.
Keddie also started with a pair of birdies on the front nine, his coming at the second and ninth holes. But the freshman carded three bogeys over his first five holes after the turn and finished in a group of seven golfers at 71.
Renwick appeared to be bucking the trend when he played his front side in 1 over and then birdied the 10th and 11th holes. But four bogeys over his closing seven holes left the junior at 3-over 73.
Vandeventer parred his first 10 holes before recording double bogeys at the 11th and 13th holes. The sophomore pulled one stroke back with a birdie at the par-5 15th and joins Renwick among a group of six players at 73.
Porteous was 2 under par for his front nine before finding trouble. Back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 preceded a double at the 12th. The junior birdied No. 13 but then bogeyed 14 and doubled the par-4 16th to fall out of the team scoring at 74.
Tennessee's second round begins Saturday at 8:50 a.m. on the No. 1 tee, alongside Florida and Arkansas. Weather conditions call for a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms and a high of 85 degrees. Winds will shift to the south-southwest but increase to 19 mph.
The three-day event continues through Sunday, with live scoring available on UTsports.com via Golfstat.com.
