Tough Finish Keeps Vols Eighth

Tennessee's chance to make up ground at the Carpet Capital Collegiate faded down the stretch Saturday and the Vols settled for even-par to remain in eighth place.
UT shot 288 for its second round, a six-stroke improvement from Friday but it could have been much more.
Garrick Porteous dropped eight shots over his final eight holes, turning a 5-under-par beauty into a 3-over 75 outcome. And Darren Renwick lost three shots over his last six holes to also finish at 75.
Only one of those results counted against Tennessee's scorecard, but the Vols still lost ground on a day when eight of the 12 teams shot under par for the second round. The Vols remain 6 over for the tournament at 582.
Clemson (566) was 5 under for the second consecutive day to slide into the overall lead past Alabama (567) by a single stroke. Georgia Tech (571), Georgia (572) and Wake Forest (573) round out the top five, with Auburn (575) and Chattanooga (575) close behind in a tie for sixth.
Robin Wingardh led Tennessee's second-round effort with a sparkling 69. The senior captain's first nine holes were action-packed, with four birdies against two bogeys. But he settled down over the second nine to record eight straight pars before closing with a birdie at the par-5 ninth hole.
Wingardh is tied for 11th at 2-under-par 142.
Jay Vandeventer turned in his second solid round in as many days. The sophomore from Bristol shot 73 thanks to single birdies on either nine against only three total bogeys. Vandeventer is tied for 15th at even-par 144.
Porteous played his first nine holes in 4 under par, birdieing the 10th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 18th holes against a lone bogey at No. 17. He kept the momentum going with a birdie at the par-4 first hole before things went the other way. Four bogeys and a pair of double bogeys left the junior at 3-over-par 147 for the tournament, tied for 30th place.
Freshman Brandon Rodgers bounced back from an 80 on Friday to shoot 71. Rodgers was 1 over for his first nine holes Saturday before stringing together three birdies over a five-hole stretch between Nos. 2-6. One final bogey left the Farragut native tied for 45th at 7-over 151.
Renwick's 75 included consecutive birdies at the 18th and first holes. The junior double bogeyed No. 17 and had closing bogeys at the fourth, sixth and ninth holes to settle in a tie for 51st place at 9-over-par 153.
Tennessee begins play in Sunday's final round on the 10th hole at 8:50 a.m. Eastern time, alongside Chattanooga and Texas Tech.
