Vols Eighth at Carpet Capital Golf

Jay Vandeventer shot 71 for Tennessee's only score under par and the Vols are eighth after one round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.
Garrick Porteous (72) and Robin Wingardh (73) just missed red figures, but UT couldn't muster a solid fourth score and stands at 6-over-par 294 to trail first-day leader Alabama (280) by 14 strokes. Darren Renwick carded a 78 and newcomer Brandon Rodgers 80 to round out the Tennessee scoring.
Vandeventer birdied the second, sixth, seventh and 10th holes against just three bogeys for 71 -- a 10-stroke improvement over his collegiate debut score (81) on the same course last year. The Bristol sophomore is tied for 10th and trails individual leaders Blayne Barber (67) of Auburn and David Dannelly (67) of Clemson by four strokes.
Porteous turned in a nice rally for the Vols on the back nine after double-bogeying the very first hole and standing 4 over for the front side. Birdies at 10, 11 and 12, followed by an eagle at the par-5 15th, moved the junior all the way to 1 under par before a bogey at No. 17 left him even par 72. Porteous is tied for 16th.
Wingardh birdied the second hole but was 2 over through nine. A nice stretch of birdies on Nos. 11, 14 and 15 dropped him under the par line before a pair of closing bogeys made for his 73 and a tie for 23rd.
Renwick opened with a birdie, but the junior's two additional birdies were no match for seven bogeys and a double on the afternoon. The defending medalist is tied for 51st after his worst round (78) by two strokes at the Carpet Capital.
Rodgers fired a pair of 40s in his collegiate debut and did not figure in the team scoring. The Farragut product's lone birdie was at the par-4 seventh and he stands in 54th place.
Alabama owns a three-stroke lead on Clemson (283), with Auburn (285), Georgia Tech (287) and Georgia (288) rounding out the top five. Play continues Saturday with Tennessee beginning on the 10th hole at 8 a.m., paired once again with Texas Tech and Georgia.
