Two Tennessee golfers among the top seven lifted the Vols to third place after 36 holes Saturday at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
Robin Wingardh (136) followed his morning round of 70 with a 6-under-par 66 in the afternoon session and stands in a three-way tie for fourth place. Teammate Darren Renwick (137) is just one stroke back in a tie for seventh after his 69-68 scorecard.
Tennessee was in third place through the morning round thanks to its 8-under-par 280. The Vols remain third heading into Sunday's final 18 holes on the strength of their 279 the second time around Forest Hills Golf Club.
Host Augusta State leads at 32-under-par 544 thanks to individual leader Patrick Reed's 11-under-par total of 133. The Jaguars won last season on their home course with a 36-under-par total.
South Carolina is second at 24-under 552, followed by Tennessee at 17-under 559 and Clemson at 560. Duke and Georgia Southern are tied for fifth at 563.
Wingardh in his first five holes Saturday had two bogeys and a double bogey. But the junior from Morarp, Sweden, played flawlessly the rest of the way, finishing his opening round with six total birdies and then recording another half-dozen birdies in the nightcap.
The 66 is a season best for Wingardh and his lowest round since shooting the same score for the second round of the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., back on Oct. 6, 2008.
Renwick also carded six birdies during his morning 18 holes against three bogeys. He began his second round with consecutive pars before holing out from the fairway for eagle at the 445-yard, par-4 eighth. It was four birdies and two bogeys the rest of the way, handing the sophomore consecutive rounds in the 60s for the first time in his UT career.
Knoxville's David Holmes recorded four birdies against two bogeys in his morning session, and then reversed those totals during the afternoon to settle in a tie for 41st place at even-par 144.
Garrick Porteous and Jay Vandeventer are tied with a group at 1-over-par 145, with Porteous shooting 71-74 and Vandeventer 74-71.
Porteous in the morning fought through back-to-back double bogeys at Nos. 11 and 12 by twice recording consecutive birdies -- first at the fifth and sixth holes and then again at Nos. 17 and 18. The sophomore's afternoon round saw two birdies against four bogeys for his 74.
Vandeventer played steady golf during the morning round, birdieing the par-4 15th hole to offset three bogeys. He registered seven birdies in the afternoon but bogeyed three of his final four holes en route to 71, the freshman's sixth collegiate score of par or better.
Tennessee begins Sunday's final round on the No. 1 tee at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. Sunny skies are expected to boost afternoon temperatures past the mid-80s. Live scoring is available on UTsports.com via Golfstaf.com.
