Tennessee improved five positions Tuesday to a fifth-place showing at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The Vols fired their second consecutive 9-over-par 297 at Sawgrass Country Club to finish the tournament at 898, or 34 over par. Knoxville's David Holmes led the effort with a 2-under-par 70, while Darren Renwick shot 75, Robin Wingardh 76 and Garrick Porteous 76 for the Tennessee scoring.
Tournament host North Florida (876) led wire-to-wire for the team victory, claiming the top spot by 12 strokes over second-place LSU (888). Duke (889) fell to third and Alabama (895) was fourth, with Tulsa (898) tying the Vols in fifth and Florida (899) finishing seventh. North Florida's Joe Byun earned medalist honors at 4-under-par 212.
Holmes, UT's senior captain, fashioned his best day of the tournament on Tuesday -- marking the third collegiate event this season he has scored his low round on the final day of competition.
Tennessee began third-round play on the back nine, and Holmes started quickly with birdies at the 11th and 15th holes. He moved to 4 under par for his round with birdies at Nos. 1 and 2, but dropped shots at the par-3 third and par-4 seventh to close with 70. Holmes improved by 32 places on Tuesday's leaderboard to a tie for 34th at 11-over-par 227.
Renwick recorded his fourth top-20 finish this season, tying for 15th at 7-over-par 223. The Worthing, England, sophomore was even through 11 holes after birdies at Nos. 1 and 2. But Renwick bogeyed the par-5 fourth and then sandwiched three more bogeys around a birdie at the eighth to close at 75.
Wingardh matched Holmes by playing his first nine holes in 2 under par, even scoring birdies at the very same 11th and 15th holes. But his first quadruple bogey of the season at the par-4 second -- where he had double bogeyed Monday -- led to a 42 front side and 76 for the day. The Morarp, Sweden, junior finished in a tie for 21st at 9-over-par 225.
Porteous scored all three days for the Vols and nearly registered his third consecutive 75. The sophomore from Bamburgh Castle, England, played each side in 2 over par thanks to continued good fortune at the par-5 11th hole. Porteous birdied Tuesday and was 4 under par on that hole for the tournament, finishing in a tie for 27th at 10-over 226.
Cameron Lawrence registered his second eagle in as many days, this time at No. 11 (UT had a par, three birdies and an eagle Tuesday on the par-5 11th). The Brentwood junior added birdies at the 15th, first and seventh holes to shoot 77 and finish in a tie for 54th at 16-over-par 232.
Playing in the tournament as an individual, Greenbrier sophomore Justin Walker was 4 over par on each nine and closed with an 80 to tie for 74th place at 22-over-par 238.
Tennessee's next competition is March 12-14 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas.
