Wingardh's Round Can't Lift Vols

Robin Wingardh played his way to within two strokes of the lead Sunday at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, offsetting an otherwise disappointing start for Tennessee.
Wingardh helped the UT cause as much as he could, shooting a 1-under-par 71 that groups him among a dozen golfers within two strokes of the individual lead. The Vols as a team shot 21-over 309 to tie Texas for last place in the 15-team field at Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Fla.
"This is by far the best tournament I've ever played as far as organization, the course -- it's just a really fun event," Wingardh said of the posh Orlando-area site. "The course is known for being difficult, so it's a really great test and a real fun course to play."
UT's senior captain opened with eight consecutive pars before back-to-back bogeys at the ninth and 10th holes. But that seemed to light a fire under the Morarp, Sweden, native, who promptly strung together four birdies over his next seven holes before a closing bogey.
"I had a lot of missed fairways early and then started playing better," Wingardh said. "On 12, I hit a good iron shot to about five feet and made a good putt. It was only about five feet but downhill and fast."
Wingardh then fired his second shot at No. 13, a 4-iron on the 558-yard par 5, to within 20 feet. He said he nearly holed the ensuing putt but settled for a tap-in birdie.
"On 14, I hit a good drive and then almost made my wedge shot. I hit it to about a foot-and-a-half for a gimmie-birdie. And then I made a good birdie on 17, about an eight-footer on the par 5."
Everyone is chasing Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus, who shot 3-under-par 69 to grab the first-day advantage. Stanford and TCU share the opening-round team lead after matching 290s pushed them one stroke clear of third-place Alabama (291). LSU (293) and Texas Tech (297) round out the top five.
Garrick Porteous shot 76 for Tennessee and is tied for 32nd. The junior's front nine was his tougher battle, with two birdies against four bogeys and a double bogey. Porteous then played the back nine in even par.
Freshman Max Smith shot 79 to fall into a tie for 59th place. Smith also played his front nine in 40 strokes, birdieing just the par-4 fourth hole. But the Berkshire, England, native played some of his best golf late with five consecutive pars to close the round.
Darren Renwick shot 83 and is tied for 70th place. The junior didn't register a single birdie and carded a pair of double bogeys on the front side, shooting 43-40 for the day.
Brandon Rodgers did not score for Tennessee, shooting 86 to fall to 74th place.
Tennessee begins its second round Monday at 9:15 a.m. Eastern time, joining Central Florida and Texas on the 10th tee. Weather conditions in the Orlando area call for a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms and a high of 88, with winds around 10 mph.
