Smith, Conkic Open All-American with Doubles Win

Tennessee juniors John-Patrick Smith and Boris Conkic upset the No. 2 seed in doubles Thursday morning in the opening round of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Smith also won his first singles match, advancing past No. 99 Matt Kecki of Southern California.
Playing as a doubles team for the first time, Smith and Conkic defeated Southern California's Robert Farah and Steve Johnson 9-7. Smith and Conkic trailed 4-2 early but rallied to tie the match 5-5, eventually taking a 6-5 lead.
The Tennessee duo faces Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski of LSU in the round of 16.
Smith, the tournament's No. 2 seed, played his first-round singles match against Kecki in the evening. Smith won the first set 6-1 and was ahead 3-0 in the second set when the match ended.
He plays No. 57 Kallim Stewart of UCLA in the round of 16 on Friday beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Stewart won his first round match 6-1, 6-1 over Harvard's Alexei Chijoff-Evans.
Conkic lost in a close opening-round match to No. 25 Raony Carvalho of Texas Tech 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. In the consolation draw Friday, Conkic faces another opponent ranked in the top 30: Reid Carleton of Duke, who is ranked 29th in the preseason. The match is slated for 2:30 p.m.
