Smith, Brewer Advance to Semifinals on Rainy First Day

Junior John-Patrick Smith and senior Matt Brewer each won two matches Friday to reach the semifinals in the top flight of the Crimson Tide Fall Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Play ended early because of rain and will resume Saturday morning.
Smith, the No. 2-ranked player in the country, extended his winning streak to 12 matches. He beat Tennessee Tech's Alex Chen 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and then won 6-1, 6-4 over Georiga Southern's Juan Melian-Puigventos.
Brewer improved to 8-4 with his pair of wins. He defeated Vanderbilt's Adam Baker 7-5, 6-1 in the first round. Brewer was leading Evgeny Slesarev 5-7, 6-4, 3-1 when Slesarev retired.
True freshman Edward Jones lost his first-round match to Charlie Jones of Vanderbilt 6-1, 6-3 in the first flight. Senior Davey Sandgren received a bye into the quarterfinals of the second flight but lost to Daniel Moser of UAB 6-4, 6-4.
Redshirt freshman Taylor Patrick won his first match in the fifth bracket over Eric Mattheison 6-4, 6-2. Patrick then lost in the quarterfinals 7-6 (6), 7-5 to Scott Lieberman of Vanderbilt
No Vols competed in doubles Friday because of the weather.
