The Tennessee men's golf team moved up to No. 6 in the latest national rankings released Thursday by Golfweek, improving 16 spots from its No. 22 preseason ranking.
Senior Chris Paisley is ranked No. 14 in Golfweek's first collegiate player rankings of the season. Paisley was the Vols' top finisher Sunday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., tying for fourth in the individual standings.
The Volunteers finished second in the event, their first of the season, at 5 over par. Chattanooga, which edged UT by five strokes for the team championship, climbed to No. 5 in the Golfweek ratings.
Sophomore Robin Wingardh is also among the top 50 players, earning a No. 40 ranking after he tied for 13th last weekend. Wingardh fired a 2-under-par 70 in the third round to jump 18 spots on the final day.
The rating system is based on a mathematical formula that uses a team's or player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents.
Tennessee returns to action Sept. 28 through Sept. 30 when it travels to Toledo, Ohio, for the PING/Golfweek Preview Invitational at the Inverness Club, which is the site of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in May.
