Tennessee tennis player John-Patrick Smith won his first round match Thursday in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships but could advance no further as the 10th-ranked singles player was upset in the next round.
Smith began the day with a straight-set win over Southern California's 32nd-ranked Jaak Poldma, 6-3, 6-4. The win was the UT sophomore's fourth this season and second over a ranked opponent. In the second round, Smith went up against ETSU's Enrique Olivares. The defending NCAA singles runner-up defeated Olivares in straight-sets last May in the second round on his way to the NCAA championship match. On Thursday, Olivares was able to get a measure of revenge as the Buc got off to a quick start and was able to hold off Smith, 6-4, 7-6(4).
In doubles, Smith and partner Davey Sandgren were defeated by Southern California's Robert Farah and Steven Johnson, 8-6. The 13th-ranked UT duo plays 37th-ranked Olivier Sajous and Miguel Reyes Varela of Texas in the main draw doubles consolation bracket starting Friday.
