Smith Advances to ITA Southeast Indoor Regional Semifinals

Tennessee sophomore tennis player John-Patrick Smith won his quarterfinal match in straight-sets Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Lexington, Ky.
Smith knocked off Kentucky's Eric Quigley, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. In Monday's semifinal, the UT sophomore faces Quigley's 19th-ranked teammate Bruno Agostinelli. The two netters have never faced each other collegiately. Boris Conkic fell in his quarterfinal match to 12th-ranked Nate Schnugg of Georgia. The UT sophomore won the first set against the Bulldog but could not maintain his advantage in the next two sets as Schnugg came back to win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In consolation action, Matt Brewer and Davey Sandgren both had multiple victories. Brewer, playing in the consolation bracket for players that lost in the first round of the main draw, dropped his former teammate at Memphis, Benny Fischer, 6-3, 7-6 in his first consolation match. In his next match, the UT junior faced another familiar foe as he defeated his current UT teammate, Bryan Swartz, 6-3, 6-3. Swartz won his first consolation match over Kyle Wishing of Middle Tennessee, 6-3, 6-4.
In the consolation bracket for players that lost in the second round, Sandgren opened up with a big win over 80th-ranked Vijay Paul of Vanderbilt. The UT junior dropped the first set in a tiebreaker but was able to win the second set when it went to a tiebreaker. The 2006 All-SEC second team pick was able to outlast Paul in the third set tiebreaker to win, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 10-7. Sandgren won two more matches in the consolation bracket, knocking off Alex Pukal of South Florida and Antonio Lastre of Mississippi State.
Sophomore Jeremy Tweedt was also able to pick up a victory in consolation play as he defeated Patrick Bandy of Kentucky, 6-3, 6-2.
