Vols Advance in ITA Southeast Regionals

The Tennessee men's tennis team saw two of its doubles teams advance to the semifinals and two singles players progress to the round of 32 Friday at the ITA Southeast Indoor Regionals in Lexington, Ky.
Sophomores Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago continued their dominant play in the regional with an 8-2 win over Ricky Doverspike and Andrew Felsenthal of Alabama. In the three doubles matches in this tournament, the UT duo has outscored its opponents 24-4. Conkic and Fago face Adam Baker and Alex Zotov of Vanderbilt in the semifinals Sunday.
The 13th-ranked UT duo of Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought 9-8 win over Auburn's Tim Puetz and Alexey Tsyrenov in the quarterfinals. Sandgren and Smith face eighth-ranked Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg of Georgia in the semifinals.
In singles play, Conkic and Smith were the only the Vols to advance to Saturday's round of 32 competition.
Conkic defeated Ryan Farlow of Mississippi State, 6-1, 6-3 to advance and Smith knocked off Georgia's Drake Bernstein, 6-2, 6-2. Both Vols will play Saturday morning in the round of 32.
Jeremy Tweedt began the day with a hard-fought come-from-behind win over Miami's Keith Crowley, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 to advance to the second round. In the next round, the UT sophomore fell to Florida's Tyler Hochwalt, 7-6, 6-4.
Freshman Christian Hansen also advanced out of round one, as the Germany native defeated Vadim Ivanis of Eastern Kentucky, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Hansen was defeated by 92nd-ranked Jonas Berg of Mississippi, 7-6, 6-3.
Fago, ranked 117th in singles, defeated Daniel Vardag of Florida Atlantic, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the second round. The Italy native won the first set in his match against Kentucky's Will Beck in the second round but lost the next two sets in tiebreakers to fall to the Wildcat, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Sandgren received a bye through the first round but lost his second round match to Peter Sauska of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 6-4, 6-1.
Matt Brewer and Bryan Swartz dropped their first round matches Friday in singles. The two Vol netters will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
Saturday's schedule includes two rounds of singles action and also the beginning of consolation play in singles.
