Two Tennessee Duos In Quarterfinals At ITA Southeast Regionals

The Tennessee men's tennis team had a strong showing Thursday on the first day of the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Lexington, Ky., as two doubles tandems advance to the quarterfinals.
Sophomores Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago were dominant in their two doubles matches on the first day of competition as the UT duo dropped only two games. In the first round, the UT tandem dropped Ryan Farlow and Antonio Lastre of Mississippi State, 8-2. In the third round, the UT duo won their second match of the season over a ranked opponent as they blasted Florida's 22nd-ranked tandem of Jeff Dadamo and Tyler Hochwalt, 8-0. Conkic and Fago face Ricky Doverspike and Andrew Felsenthal of Alabama in the quarterfinals.
The 13th-ranked UT duo of Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith also won twice Thursday. In the second round, the Vols knocked off Florida's Joey Burkhardt and Carlos Cueto, 8-4. In the next round, the UT duo was victorious over Kentucky's Patrick Bandy and Alberto Gonzalez, 8-6. Sandgren and Smith face Auburn's Tim Puetz and Alexey Tsyrenov in the quarterfinals.
Christian Hansen and Jeremy Tweedt defeated Christopher Doerr and Tanner Stump, 8-3 in the second round before falling in the next round.
Matt Brewer and Bryan Swartz won their first round match over Murray State's Ben Clos and Jadir Semensin, 8-5 before dropping their second round match to 15th-ranked Bruno Agostinelli and Brad Cox of Kentucky, 8-5.
Singles play begins Friday and all eight Vols are scheduled to see action. Smith, the 10th-ranked singles player in the country, is the tournament No. 2 seed. Conkic, ranked 55th, is the 8th seed. Fago and Sandgren are also seeded. Only the top 32 players in the 105-man tournament are seeded. Tennessee has four players seeded, second only to Georgia who has five players seeded.
Doubles quarterfinal action is scheduled to start the day on Friday. After doubles is complete, singles first and second round will be played.
