The Tennessee men's tennis team defeated Kentucky 6-1 Sunday at the Boone Tennis Stadium in Lexington to improve its record to 14-4 on the season and 6-2 in the SEC. The Vols 6-2 record in the SEC is only behind top-10 teams Georgia and Ole Miss.
"It was another great team performance today," head coach Sam Winterbotham said." This is what we're striving for, having everybody contribute that is wearing a Tennessee uniform. They all fought extremely well and we're doing the things great teams do and we need to keep this focus and support amongst each other to finish the season."
The Vols won the doubles point for the 15th time this season. Bo Hardegree, playing in his first SEC match, teamed with Bobby Cameron to defeated Jorge Jorge and Roman Ogarkov 8-2 at the No. 3 position. Kaden Hensel and Kiril Tcherveniachki clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 victory over Bruno Agostinelli and Shane Collins at the No. 2 slot. Tennessee's Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers lost for only the third time in dual-match, falling to Peter Bjork and Marcus Sundh 8-6 at the No. 1 position.
Rogers rebounded from his tough doubles defeat to gave the Vols a 2-0 lead. The UT senior defeated Jorge 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Rogers won both of his matches this weekend in straight-sets and only dropped five games combined in the two matches.
Tcherveniachki remained undefeated in SEC play with a straight-set win over Ogarkov at the No. 5 position. The Auckland, New Zealand native is 8-0 in singles during SEC play and has an overall record of 14-1 in singles during dual-match play.
Chris Racz bounced back from his first loss in dual-match play to clinch UT's win with a 6-0, 7-6 win over Collins at the No. 2 position. Racz is 9-1 this season in singles during dual-match play.
Tennessee won at the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions Sunday and now has a record of 45-7 (.865) at the bottom three positions in the singles lineup.
Hensel improved to 8-3 at the No. 1 position in the singles lineup with a come-from-behind win over Agostinelli 6-7, 6-2, 1-0. Hensel won the third-set super-tiebreaker 10-6. Hensel is now 25-9 overall this season.
Cameron defeated Bjork 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 to round out UT's victories. Cameron won both of his matches at the No. 2 position this weekend and is now 4-3 in SEC play this season.
The Vols look to extend their seven match win streak Friday when they host 10th-ranked Ole Miss (18-2, 7-1 SEC) at 5 p.m. at the UT Outdoor Varsity Courts.
