Vols in Third After Second Day of NCAA East Regional

AUBURN, Ala.-The 23rd-ranked Tennessee men's golf team slipped to third after the second day of play at the 2003 NCAA East Regional, being played at the Auburn University Course (par 72, 7,207 yards). The Vols have a two-day scorecard of 281-291-572.
Leading the way for UT is sophomore Ross McGowan, who is in seventh. McGowan shot an even-par 72 to go with his first-round score of 67 for a total of 139.
Second in Vol scoring is sophomore John-Scott Rattan. Rattan ended the day tied for 24th with a 70-73-143. Fellow sophomore David Skinns is two strokes back at 70-75-145, tying him for 30th.
Rounding out the Vol competitors are seniors Andrew Pratt and Ian Parnaby. Pratt has a 74-74-148, tying him for 54th. Parnaby bounced back from a rough first day of 77 to record an even-par 72 for a 149 to place him in a tie for 61st.
Top-ranked Clemson leads the tournament with a 285-277-562. Georgia Tech, ranked 15th, is second with a 281-286-567. Following third-place Tennessee is a three-way tie for fourth with No. 5 Florida, No. 2 Wake Forest and Duke all having scores of 578.
Defending NCAA individual champion Troy Matteson of Georgia Tech leads the individual portion of the event with a 68-67-135. Matt Hendrix of Clemson is in second with a 70-67-137. William Ted Brown of Virginia Commonwealth, Ty Harris of Georgia State, Gareth Maybin of South Alabama and Lee Williams of Auburn are tied for third with scores of 138 to round out the top individuals.
The Vols will be in action again Saturday with the final round of play as they look to advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 1997. Live scoring is available at www.Utsports.com.
