Skinns, Powell Advance at 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship

University of Tennessee sophomore David Skinns and former Vol Jason Powell advanced to match play at the 2002 U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield, Mich.
Skinns, the reigning SEC and Softspikes Freshman of the Year, finished tied for 15th with a 68-72--140 (even). For the day, Skinns collected four birdies, with two on the front nine and two on the back. Powell advanced with a scorecard of 69-72--141, which placed him in a tie for 28th.
The cut for match play was made at 3-over-par 143. Senior Andrew Pratt and sophomores John Scott Rattan and Ross McGowan failed to qualify for match play. Pratt finished with a 72-73--145 for a tie for 81st, while Rattan finished tied for 112th with a 75-72--147 and McGowan tied for 150th with a 75-75--150.
Bill Haas, a junior at Wake Forest claimed the 36-hole medalist honors with a 67-68--135 (five-under par).
The low 64 golfers advance to match play, which begins Wednesday. The Championship runs through Sunday, Aug. 25 with a 36- hole final. The winner of the U.S. Amateur earns a spot in next year's U.S. Open.
