KNOXVILLE, Tenn.-- Tennessee's Mario Toledo won his fourth straight match Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Omni Hotels Region III Championships being held at the Varsity Tennis Center on the UT campus.
Toledo, a senior for the Vols, defeated Florida's Eleazor Magallan Saturday 6-3, 6-4 and raised his season record to 9-5. The No. 2-seeded Toledo's play seems to become stronger as this event unfolds and he will need to continue his progression with Georgia's Nicholas Boeker waiting for him in Sunday's quarterfinal round. Boeker had earlier in the day ended Vol freshman Mark Dietrich's impressive tournament run with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
"Mario (Toledo) has played his way into this tournament," said UT head coach Michael Fancutt. "He is getting stronger with each match. Mark (Dietrich) has also had a great tournament regardless of his result today. He has shown great promise as a future Vol."
The Vols doubles tandem of Toledo and sophomore Simon Rea made the most of their day Saturday, winning two matches to advance to Sunday's semifinal round. The No. 50-ranked duo began the day with an 8-4 win over Vanderbilt's Chad Harris and Bobby Reynolds. The Tennessee pair then made quick work of MTSU's Short and Staniak 8-1 to advance. The Vol duo will take on Mississippi State's Carvahlo and Lebelicard in the semifinal round Sunday following the singles matches. Coach Fancutt seemed extremely pleased with his doubles tandem saying "these guys are looking good out there. They have been stringing wins together since the All-American (Oct. 5-12) and now they won four in a row here and are in contention."
The Vols will be back in action Sunday beginning at 9 A.M. at the UT Varsity Tennis Center. Admission is free.
