Herrington Ties for Low Amateur Score at the Masters
April 10, 2026 | Men's Golf
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The week of a lifetime came to an end for Jackson Herrington on Friday afternoon at Augusta National Golf Club.
The Tennessee sophomore posted a 4-over-par 76 in the second round of the Masters, matching his round one score to close the tournament at 8-over-par and tied for 69th place.
While Herrington fell just short of making the cut and playing into the weekend, he matched Ethan Fang for the lowest score by an amateur at the 2026 Masters. The Silver Cup, traditionally awarded to the low amateur at each Masters tournament, will not be awarded in 2026 as none of the six amateurs competing survived the 36-hole cut.
The highlight of the Dickson, Tennessee, native's Friday was an even par score on the first nine, his best nine-hole stretch of the first two rounds. After recording par on his first four holes, Herrington carded bogeys on hole No. 5 and hole No. 6. He quickly responded to the adversity with back-to-back birdies on hole No. 7 and hole No. 8, climbing back to even par on the day.
As Herrington made the turn to the second nine, he was squarely in contention to make the cut, hovering around the 50th place mark. Following a bogey on Hole No. 10, disaster struck on Amen Corner as an errant chip found Rae's Creek on hole No. 12, leading to a triple bogey. Despite the setback, Herrington closed strong on his final six holes of the week, posting six consecutive pars to conclude a memorable time at Augusta National.
Herrington, filled with optimism for the future, spoke to the media after the round. "I made it here, so that's something in and of itself", he said. "If I keep doing what I've been doing and mature and learn from this week, I'll be back and we'll have one of those green jackets on. It was a special experience, and I can't wait to be back someday. Hopefully next year."
For Herrington, the Masters is not the final major championship of 2026. His runner-up finish at the 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship also gives him an exemption into the 2026 U.S. Open Championship, set for June 18-21 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.
The sophomore will return to the Tennessee men's golf team as it enters the most important time of year. The Volunteers will compete at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial on Monday and Tuesday, before heading to the SEC Championships, which are set for April 22-26. NCAA regionals will follow for the Volunteers, where the team will attempt to reach the NCAA Championships for the third straight season.
