Davis in Individual Lead After Round One At NCAA Championships; Lady Vols Tied for Eighth
May 16, 2025 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. - Tennessee women's golfer Bailey Davis is in the individual lead after one round at the NCAA Championships as the Lady Vols are in eighth place as a team.
Davis turned in an impressive scorecard in round one, a 5-under 67, and is one shot ahead of second place heading into the second round. Davis' 67 (-5) on Friday marks the lowest round-one score by a Lady Vol at the NCAA Championships. She also tied former Lady Vol and current assistant coach, Anna Newell, for the second-lowest round a Lady Vol has had in the NCAA Championships (2016, round two).
The White Plains, Maryland, native was 1-under at the turn in the first round and then proceeded to shoot a bogey-free 31 (-4) on her second nine holes of the day.
"I think I was seeing the golf course for what it was," said Davis. "I was just playing simple golf–trying to hit the fairway and trying to hit the green and then make a putt if I could. I knew that my ball-striking was pretty solid. I was just trying to stay consistent and play simple golf.
As a team, the Lady Vols are tied with Northwestern for eighth place after a 3-over showing on Friday.
Freshman Kyra Van Kan delivered UT's second-best round of the day after carding a 1-over 73 with a few birdies scattered across the round. She enters round two tied for 46th.
After a tough start on her first nine holes, Sofie Engeseth went even-par after the turn and registered a 3-over 75 for Tennessee's third counting score on Friday. Engeseth is tied for 78th ahead of Saturday's round.
Manassanan Chotikabhukkana is one shot behind Engeseth at 4-over and is currently tied for 98th.
Tennessee's final golfer, Martina Lopez-Lanchares, posted a 78 to open the event.
