#9 Lady Vols Fall Short at #13 Vanderbilt, 4-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The ninth-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 13 Vanderbilt in a five-hour affair on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Vols (16-6, 10-5 SEC) secured a gritty doubles point over Vanderbilt (18-5, 11-4 SEC), before falling in singles play. Elza Tomase and Saray Yli-Piipari notched their first victory together, defeating Valeria Ray and Bridget Stammel, 6-1. The No. 36-ranked tandem of Catherine Aulia and Leyla Britez Risso locked up the opening doubles point with a 7-5 affair against No. 14 Celia-Belle Mohr and Sophia Webster. Conley Raidt and Maeve Thornton were battling in a tiebreak against Sonya Macavi and Amy Stevens when play halted.
In singles, the Commodores tied things up at one apiece when No. 6 Tomase dropped a 3-6, 4-6 result to No. 17 Mohr. No. 87 Britez Risso gave UT the upper hand, defeating No. 48 Bridget Stammel, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Francesca Mattioli posted a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph versus Sophia Webster to make the score 3-1.
No. 36 Aulia could not fend off No. 81 Ray, dropping a 7-6(6), 0-6, 3-6 contest. Raidt fell 0-6, 2-6 to Amy Stevens, which tied the contest at three-all.
The match came down to Vanesa Suarez, who took things to a seven-point tiebreaker in the third set, but ultimately was defeated by Trienta Vijayakumar, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(9).
Up Next: The Lady Vols earned the seven seed at the SEC Tournament, hosted at Auburn. Tennessee will play the winner of the No. 15-seed Missouri or No. 10-seed Ole Miss on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.
