Match Preview: #20 Lady Vols Head to Baton Rouge for Match Against LSU

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 20th-ranked Tennessee volleyball program goes on the road for the first time in conference play on Friday, traveling to Baton Rouge to meet LSU. The match-up is slated for 8:00 p.m. ET at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and will be streamed on SEC Network+.
The Lady Vols are coming off a pair of sweeps at home to open conference play. Tennessee got its conference schedule started in a dominating win over Georgia on Sept. 24, before ending the week on Sept. 26 with a victory over South Carolina. Senior outside hitter Hayden Kubik led the team in attacks both games, notching 13 and 15 in each game respectively. Kubik also added a double-double to her season stat line, finishing the match against Georgia with 10 digs. Caroline Kerr added double-double in both wins last week, setting up the offense with 36 assists while showing up defensively with 12 digs against Georgia, while finishing with 29 assists and 12 digs against South Carolina. Kerr continued her strong start to the 2025 campaign, while also bringing her career double-doubles total to 16, ranking sixth all-time in program history in the 25-point rally scoring era.
LSU enters the contest with an 8-5 record after splitting its first two games in conference last week. The Tigers picked up their first conference win of the season on Sept. 28, defeating Arkansas on the road 3-1. Outside hitter Jurnee Robinson enters the week leading the SEC and ranking eighth nationally with 4.77 kills per set, while also ranking second in the conference and 10th in the nation with 5.30 points per set. Outside hitter Nia Washington averages 3.89 points per set and 3.27 kills per set, while leading the team with 17 aces and adding 20 blocks. LSU leads the all-time series with Tennessee, holding a record of 40-33. The Lady Vols won last season's meeting in Knoxville.
Redshirt Freshman Zoë  Humphrey added to an impressive start to her Tennessee career, earning SEC Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday. Humphrey was strong at the net for Tennessee, finishing the week with 13 total blocks. Humphrey set a new career-high on Sept. 26 against South Carolina with eight blocks. She added five blocks in the sweep over Georgia on Sept. 24. Humphrey was also effective offensively, adding nine kills to her season total while hitting for a .563 hitting percentage. The Houston, Texas native has 40 kills on the season and leads the team with a .486 hitting percentage. Humphrey has been a force at the net for the Lady Vols, ranking second on the team with 40 blocks. Humphrey is the third Lady Vol to earn a conference weekly award, with Chelsea Sutton and Kerr earning honors earlier in the season.
The offense continues to be successful this season, with the Lady Vols leading the nation in hitting percentage at .332. The squad also ranks in the top-15 nationally in kills per set at 14.23. Kubik leads the team with 111 kills on the season, and is followed closely by Pautyn Chapman at 107. It has been a full-team effort by the offense, with six players with 40 or more kills this season. Sutton leads the team in hitting percentage at .482, which is the best in the SEC and ranks third in all of Division I.
The Big Orange Defense has also been a bright spot this season, holding opposing teams to the second-lowest hitting percentage in the country at .119. Tennessee's defense at the net has been impressive as well, with four players totaling 20+ blocks this year. Sutton leads the team with 53, while Humphrey is next at 40. The Lady Vols have allowed an average of 9.72 kills per set. As a team, Tennessee is averaging 13.18 digs per set, with transfer libero Gülce Güçtekin leading the pack with 157 digs.
Tennessee is in the midst of a 10-game winning streak, dating back to Sept. 4. This marks the longest such streak for the Lady Vols since an 11-game win streak during the 2023 season. The Big Orange is also on a six-game sweep streak.
