October 03, 2025 | Volleyball
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The No. 20 ranked Tennessee volleyball team (12-1, 3-0) stepped up late after falling down 2-0 to take the reverse sweep win over LSU, 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 15-8). The victory extended the Lady Vols' winning streak to 11 games, tying the longest streak since the 2023 season.
The Lady Vol offense put on another impressive performance, with 68 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Hayden Kubik was the star of the night, with the senior outside hitter finishing with a career-high 27 kills, while adding 10 digs for her second double-double on the year. Caroline Kerr notched her third consecutive double-double, netting 39 assists and 14 digs. On the defensive end, Tennessee's floor defense came up clutch with 58 digs, led by Gülce Güçtekin with 18. Paityn Chapman had a strong night of her own, picking up 13 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Plante had her own steady evening, coming off the bench for nine kills and four digs.
After a back and forth start to the first set, LSU would go on a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 16-10 lead. Tennessee would attempt a comeback, but it could not be completed as a kill by Jurnee Robinson ended the first frame. Kubik led Tennessee with four kills, while the trio of Plante, Chelsea Sutton, and Zoë Humphrey each had two. Izzy Mogridge came off the bench to get seven assists, while Güçtekin got started with five digs.
It was a similar second set for the Lady Vols in the second, as LSU took the advantage early. Each Tennessee attempted comeback was met with an LSU response, with LSU ultimately taking the 2-0 lead. Chapman and Plante led the way on offense for Tennessee, collecting four kills apiece. Kerr had eight assists in the stanza, while picking up four digs as well.
With their backs against the wall, Tennessee answered in the third to keep the game alive. After splitting points early on, multiple runs by the Big Orange gave them a lead they would not relinquish. LSU would mount a late comeback in the set, but a kill from Kubik would be the decider in the third. Kubik delivered eight kills while hitting for an astonishing .615. Joining her offensive was Chapman again, who delivered five kills of her own. Kerr helped set up the Tennessee offense with 10 assists, while Güçtekin led the way on defense with five more digs.
Tennessee dominated the fourth set, out hitting the home-standing Tigers with a .423 percentage to .077. Offense and defense were the name of the frame, with 14 kills for the team and 17 digs. Kubik's impressive night continued, with seven more kills in the fourth, while tying for the team lead in the fourth with Güçtekin with five digs. Kerr delivered another 10 assists in the frame, setting up a Lady Vol offense that had 14 kills.
The Big Orange came into the fifth set with all the momentum, and that spurred them on to complete the reverse sweep on the road. Tennessee would take a 10-6 lead midway through the set, and that would be all it needed as a Kubik kill and an attack in the net by LSU would finish off the match. Kubik closed out her amazing night on the court with six more kills. Kerr's double-double performance in the game was capped off with six more assists and a set leading four digs. 11 kills for the Big Orange helped complete the performance in the set, while hitting for a strong .611.
Up next, the Lady Vols continue their three game road swing next Wednesday, as they travel to Austin, Texas for a match-up against No. 2 Texas. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed on SEC Network+.
