No. 20 Lady Vols Grab Road Victory at Purdue, 6-1
February 07, 2020 | Women's Tennis
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 20th-ranked Tennessee women's team started off its two-match road trip with a victory Friday afternoon, taking down Purdue, 6-1.
The win improved Tennessee's all-time mark against the Boilermakers to 19-0, including 2-0 under Alison Ojeda.
"I'm happy we're leaving Purdue with a win," Ojeda said. "We came out a little tentative in doubles and it showed as we got down quickly on courts two and three.
"Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin did a good job getting off the court quickly with a win and Ari's experience really helped as she and Briggs were able to battle back and help clinch the doubles point."
Tennessee (4-1) began the match by winning the doubles point in dramatic fashion.
On court one, the Lady Vols' 11th-ranked duo of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin cruised to a 6-1 win over Nikol Dobrilova and Seira Shimizu to improve to 3-0 on the year in dual matches.
After Johanna Silva and Rebeka Mertena were edged out on court two, Carly Briggs and Ari Riley stormed back from an early deficit to take the match on court three over Ena Babic and Alex Sabe, 6-4, giving Tennessee the doubles point.
The Lady Vols have won the doubles point in all five matches this season.
"Going into singles, our goal as a team was to play determined and focused tennis," Ojeda said. "We did that and got better in the process."
In singles, Tennessee took five of six matches from Purdue (3-4).
Mertena, the No. 38 ranked singles player in the nation, claimed the Lady Vols' first singles win, taking down Sabe on court two. Mertena improved to 5-0 in singles dual matches on the season with the win.
Freshman Hadley Doyle extended Tennessee's lead to 3-0 on court five with a two-set, 6-3, 6-3 win over Csilla Fodor, before Briggs clinched the match for the Lady Vols on court three with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Shimizu. Briggs is now 5-0 in singles dual matches to open her collegiate career.
With Tennessee having clinched the match, the remaining three singles matches were played out.
Sophomore Julie Ball defeated Zeynep Naz Ozturk on court six, 6-3, 6-3. Silva, the nation's No. 59 singles player, claimed Tennessee's final singles win on court four, 7-5, 6-2 over Dovnik.
On court one, Staines took the first set, but dropped second and third-set tiebreakers to Babic.
UP NEXT: Tennessee stays within the Hoosier State, heading south to face Indiana on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET. The Lady Vols defeated Indiana last season, 5-2, and have faced the Hoosiers every year since 1986 (35 straight seasons).
