Need to Know
- Tennessee went 4-0 last week, defeating Morehead State on Tuesday night before sweeping SEC Eastern division rival Kentucky on the road last weekend.
- By sweeping the Wildcats, the Vols accomplished a handful of feats that haven't been done in quite some time, among them:
- First SEC road series win since taking two of three from Florida in Gainesville back on April 7 and April 8 of 2017.Â
- First series sweep of Kentucky since 2004 and first series sweep in Lexington since 2001.
- First series sweep against an SEC team on the road since April 7-9, 2010 at Georgia.
- Third series sweep of the season, the most since also sweeping three opponents in 2014. The Vols have swept Appalachian State, Indiana and Kentucky this year.
- With four wins last week, the Vols reached the 30-win mark for the first time since 2014 when the team finished with a 31-24 record.
- The Vols have 30 wins in 41 games this season, the fastest the program has reached the 30-win plateau since doing it in 39 games back in 2004.
- UT's 16 runs in Friday's series-clinching win over the Wildcats were the most by a Vols' team in SEC play since May 8, 2010 in a 25-5 win at Georgia. Seven different players drove in runs and nine different players had hits for the Vols on the night.
- The Big Orange outscored Kentucky 28-5 while 11 different players drove in runs during the series.
- The Vols' pitching staff has been downright dominant over the past couple of weeks, holding opponents to two or fewer runs in eight of the teams last 10 games. UT has won all eight of those contests.
- Tennessee's pitching staff has allowed the fewest runs (123) in the SEC this season and also ranks second in the conference in ERA (2.74) and opponent batting average (.212).
- UT has won five of its last six SEC games and moved into sole possession of third place in the SEC Eastern division standings with last weekend's series sweep. The Vols' 9-9 SEC record is the best through 18 games since 2008 when the team started 10-8 in conference play.
- Alerick Soularie's two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning lifted the Vols to a 4-2 victory in the series opener against Kentucky. It was Soularie's team-leading 10th long ball of the year, the most by a UT player in a single season since Christin Stewart (now a starter for the Detroit Tigers) had 15 in 2015.
- Soularie also had a two-run double in Saturday's series finale that drove in what turned out to be the game-winning runs. The sophomore ranks among the top five in the SEC in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
- Junior pitcher Garrett Stallings continued his dominance on the mound with another stellar performance in Friday night's 16-1 win at Kentucky, earning his team-leading seventh win of the year (tied for second in the SEC).
Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (18-18, 8-10 Big South)
- 2018 Record:31-27 (14-13 Big South)
- 2018 Postseason: N/A
- Gardner-Webb was picked to finish fifth in the Big South Preseason Poll after finishing fifth in the league in 2018.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by head coach Rusty Stroupe, who is in his 17th season at the helm and is the program's all-time wins leader with 474Â victories.
- GWU is coming off a 2-2 week with a midweek win over Charlotte before dropping two of three games on the road at Winthrop over the weekend.
- The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by senior slugger Chandler Redmond, who leads the Big South and ranks 11th in the country with 14 home runs this season. Redmond also leads the conference with 45 runs batted in.
- Justin Kunz is another dangerous hitter in GWU's lineup, batting .331 with nine homers and 31 RBI this season.
- Projected starter Noah Davis is 2-0 on the season with a 6.35 ERA. The right hander has started four games and made 12 appearances, striking out 31 batters in 34.0 innings of work.Â
