No. 5/6 Lady Vols Use Pitching, Two Doubles to Split Series with Mizzou
March 31, 2019 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 5/6 Lady Vols used a one-hit pitching performance from Ashley Rogers and a seventh-inning rally to take Game 2 of the doubleheader at Mizzou, 2-1, on Sunday.
Entering the series finale on Monday, the series stands split at 1-1. Tennessee (27-6, 5-3 SEC) has won both of its conference series to date while Mizzou (17-13, 6-5 SEC) is 2-1.
At the plate, Chelsea Seggern and Ashley Morgan led the Orange and White with two hits apiece while Seggern and Cailin Hannon drove in UT's two runs.
Rogers delivered a one-hit, complete game for the Lady Vols. She allowed just one run and fired four strikeouts in the 7.0 inning outing to improve to 11-2 on the season.
Both teams traded scoreless innings to start the contest before Mizzou got on the board in the fourth. The Tiger's Hatti Moore hit a solo home run to left-center field in what would turn out to be their lone run of the game.
Tennessee moved runners into scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings before tying the game up in the sixth frame.
Morgan led off with a single back to the pitcher and Kaitlin Parsons was brought in to pinch run. Parsons then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Ayala and proceeded to score on Hannon's double roped to the right-center field wall.
In the seventh inning, Seggern plated the winning run on her 11th two-bagger of the season. Aubrey Leach worked the count for a walk and was bunted over by Jenna Holcomb. She then crossed home on Seggern's double.
ON DECK: No. 5/6 Tennessee plays Mizzou in a 7 p.m. EST rubber match on Monday night to decide the series. The game will be aired on SEC Network and a live radio broadcast will be available on UTSports.com, the Tennessee Gameday App and AM 990.
