No. 5/6 UT Wins Third SEC Series with 9-3 Rout of Mizzou
April 02, 2019 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – In the series-deciding rubber match, No. 5/6 Tennessee made a 5-run statement in the third inning and tacked on four more in the remaining frames to take game three and the series at Mizzou, 9-3.
The Lady Vols (28-6) have won all three of their Southeastern Conference series this season and are 6-3 in conference play.
At the plate, UT was led by a 2-for-3 effort from senior Aubrey Leach who scored two runs in the contest. Junior Cailin Hannon also came up big for Tennessee, plating three runs on a bases-clearing double. Overall, eight Lady Vols notched hits in the contest.
Senior right-hander Matty Moss got the starting nod and threw 2.1 innings before handing the ball over to freshman righty Ashley Rogers. Moss allowed three runs on four hits in the no-decision. Rogers earned the win after tossing 4.2 shutout frames in which she gave up just three hits and fired five strikeouts.
Mizzou jumped on the board first, plating a run on a solo homer to center field in the opening frame.
Answering in the top of the third, the Lady Vols took a commanding 5-1 lead before an out was even recorded. Katie Weimer led off with a double to the right-center gap before Rogers sent an RBI single down the left-field line in the next at-bat. A single and walk then loaded the bases, setting up Hannon's three-RBI double to left field. She advanced to third on the throw home and went on to score on Chelsea Seggern's single one batter later.
The Tigers plated two runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the frame before Holcomb laid out to make a gem of a catch in left to end the inning.
In the fourth, Tennessee scratched one more run across to extend its lead. Rogers drew a walk with one out and Tianna Batts came on to pinch run. She advanced to third on a Leach single through the right side and scored on a delayed-double steal play that chased Leach back to first.
Haley Bearden led off the fifth inning with a double and then scored on a 2-3-4-1 rundown drawn by Parsons at first to give UT a 7-3 advantage.
Tennessee scored the final runs of the game in the sixth using two hits and an error. Leach led off with a single to first and scored three at-bats later on a throwing error by Mizzou's first baseman. Seggern then scored on Ashley Morgan's single after taking first on a hit-by-pitch.
