#5/6 Tennessee's Rally Falls Short as Mizzou Takes Game 1, 5-4
March 31, 2019 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 5/6 Tennessee's rally fell just short in Game 1 of the series opening doubleheader at Mizzou as the Lady Vols dropped the contest, 5-4, on Sunday.
At the pate, the Lady Vols were led by Gracie Osbron (2-for-3) and Jenna Holcomb (2-for-4). The duo drove in two of UT's RBIs in the game while Leach recorded two on an RBI single in the sixth.
All three of Tennessee's pitchers saw action in the circle, but Ashley Rogers was charged with the loss. She gave up three runs on two hits without recording an out in the first inning.
In relief, Matty Moss gave up one unearned run through 2.0 innings of work. Caylan Arnold then entered the game in the third and went on to close the contest, allowing one run on three hits. She retired six of her batters faced via strikeout.
The Tigers jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead in the first, plating the runs on two hits and a wild pitch. All three runners reached base off of Rogers and she was consequently credited with allowing the scores. Moss entered with runners on second and third, going on to record all three outs.
In the next inning, Missouri extended its lead by one run as the Tigers took advantage of a free pass and an error before scoring on a single.
Tennessee threatened in the third and fourth innings, but it didn't put a run on the board until the fifth. Cailin Hannon reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second after Aubrey Leach drew a walk. She then came around to score on Holcomb's second hit of the game, an RBI single to center.
Mizzou sent a solo shot to the berm in left-center field to make it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the frame.
Rallying in the top of the sixth, Tennessee scratched three runs across to pull within one. Ashley Morgan was hit by a pitch for the second time and scored on an Osbron single back to the pitcher. UT then put two more runs on the board thanks to a Leach single to shortstop, making it a 5-4 game.
The Lady Vols moved the tying run into scoring position in the seventh inning, but three straight outs ended the Tennessee threat.
