Lady Vols Roll Past Missouri, 4-0
April 12, 2018 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 31st-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team extended its home winning streak to four matches with a 4-0 shutout against Missouri at Barksdale Stadium on Thursday night.
The Lady Vols (17-9, 3-9 SEC) took an early lead after winning the doubles point with a pair of hard-fought matches. UT kept the momentum going by taking the first three courts to finish in singles and earning its eighth shutout of the season.
"Overall, we played well," said head coach Alison Ojeda. "We came out a little slow, but for us to put ourselves in a sticky situation halfway through doubles and being able to stay calm and raise our level of play, that is really hard to do. It's fantastic that these girls were able to do that. We knew Missouri was going to come out and be ready to go. That carried over to singles, and our girls did a great job. We came out focused today."
In doubles, Ariadna Riley and Kaitlin Staines continued their strong play together on Court 1, defeating the duo Clare Raley and Marta Oliveira, 6-4. Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck clinched the doubles point and gave the Big Orange the early advantage with a 7-5 win on Court 2 over Amina Ismail and Serena Nash.
Riley kicked things off in singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Court 3 versus Taylor Gruber. Staines quickly followed that up with a win of her own against Clare Raley, 6-2, 6-4. Schuck sealed the victory for the Lady Vols by downing Ellie Wright, 6-2, 6-4, on Court 5.
Tennessee is back in action on Saturday for its regular-season finale against Arkansas at Barksdale Stadium at noon.
"We have to continue to put ourselves in a position to win," said Ojeda. "We were able to overcome that today. Arkansas is going to be another tough match. They're another good team, and they're going to come out here swinging. We have to be focused and ready to play."
