Lady Vols Split Doubleheader
March 18, 2018 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The 30th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis teak split its doubleheader on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
Â
The Lady Vols (13-5, 0-5 SEC) dropped the first match of the day to No. 18 Florida, 4-1, before responding with a 4-0 shutout against Lipscomb to end the weekend.
Â
"Our team came, and we have been challenging ourselves to come out with high intensity like we did against Georgia and South Carolina, so that was our challenge again today against Florida," said head coach Alison Ojeda. "I feel like once you do that five or six matches in a row, that shows you who you are as a team. We fluctuated a little bit from that today, but we are getting better. I feel like we panicked a little bit and didn't stay disciplined at the beginning of the match. There are a few things that we are missing to be a really good team every day.
Â
"With Lipscomb, we knew that they had nothing to lose, so they were going to come out playing hard. It's tough to take a loss to Florida and then come back out and be mentally ready to go again a couple hours later. To their credit, our girls did great from start to finish. We were able to take care of business. This time last year, I don't know we would have responded."
Â
Johanna Silva went 2-0 on the day in singles, defeating UF's Katie Kubicz, 6-4, 6-4, to score UT's lone point against the Gators and cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Thabile Tshatedi from Lipscomb.
Â
"Jo did a great job today," Ojeda said. "The thing she is doing really well right now is playing tennis. What she isn't doing well is the mental approach to losing tough points. At times, she is too hard on herself. She battled that a little bit today but was able to calm down, regroup and close out the match."
Â
Gabby Schuck and Chelsea Sawyer both posted impressive 6-1, 6-0 wins against their respective opponents in singles during the second match of the day.
Â
In doubles, Sawyer and Elizabeth Profit downed the duo of Thabile Tshatedi and Kateryna Kandyba, 6-2, to get things rolling. Schuck and Sadie Hammond clinched the early 1-0 lead for UT against the Bisons with a 6-3 victory over Kateryna Popova and Madeleine Brooks, 6-3.
Â
Next weekend, Tennessee hits the road again to face Vanderbilt (March 23) and Kentucky (March 25). For the most up-to-date information about the Tennessee women's tennis program, follow @Vol_WTennis on Twitter.
