Lady Vols Lose to Vanderbilt, 4-0
March 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The 37th-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team lost to in-state rival and No. 3 Vanderbilt, 4-0, on the road at Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Lady Vols (13-6, 0-6 SEC) split the first two matches in doubles, as Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck defeated the duo of Emma Kurtz and Emily Smith, 6-3, on Court 2. The Commodores would take the early lead with a 6-4 win at the top spot to clinch doubles.
"Today was another tough match where we competed hard and came up just short," Hammond said after the match. "I'm proud of the way we continue to fight and improve each match. I know this will help us tremendously in the second half of the season."
"Today's match was hard fought from start to finish," said Riley. "It's incredible to see how resilient our team has become and the amount of pride we show for each other and our school in each match we play. Although we fell a bit short today, we continued to compete as hard as we could, which will eventually lead us to achieving the results we want. Our conference is the toughest in the country for a reason, and we fully embrace the challenges it brings. We're looking to bounce back and pull off a big win this Sunday."
Vanderbilt claimed the first three courts to finish in singles to win the match, 4-0.
"It was another great opportunity to get out on the court today and play some high-level tennis," said Staines. "Vanderbilt are number three in the country, so we knew it was going to be a battle. It unfortunately didn't go our way today, but we are so close to beating some really good schools. It's coming."
UT heads to Lexington to play Kentucky on Sunday at noon in the Boone Tennis Complex. For the most up-to-date information about the Tennessee women's tennis program, follow @Vol_WTennis on Twitter.
