Vols Post 6 More Wins at Shamrock Invitational
March 19, 2016 | Track & Field
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Tennessee wrapped a successful weekend at the 20th Annual Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational with a busy Saturday that included six more first-place finishes.
UT spent much of spring break in South Carolina to train and make the transition from indoor season to outdoor season.
"We had a great week of training in Myrtle Beach," Tennessee director of track and field and cross country Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "Coastal Carolina was a great host. We utilized their facility quite a bit. They were awesome and we really enjoyed the environment. We had a great team environment. We were able to celebrate the great indoor season that we had and put in some great training for the outdoor season."
Tennessee posted nine first-place finishes (four on the men's side, five on the women's side) over the three-day meet. On Saturday, Zach Long won the men's 3,000 meters (8:23.64), Tyler Porter won the men's pole vault seeded division (5.06 meters/16-7.25), Lenysse Dyer won the women's 200 meters (23.46), Maria Jimenez won the women's javelin (49.19 meters/161-5.00), Maya Neal won the women's long jump (5.60 meters/18-4.50) and Cassie Wertman won the women's shot put (16.58 meters/54-4.75).
"The competition was very good for us," Sullivan said. "We were able to open up in a lot of the events that are specific to the outdoor season like the discus and the javelin and the hammer on the throws side of things. We were very happy to see Kyle Quinn open up so well. Maria had a PR in the javelin too, so that went really well for us. We thought it was productive."
UT will focus on training next week before the squad splits to compete in both the Texas Relays (March 30 to April 2) and the Florida Relays (April 1-2).
Tennessee Men
The UT men did very well in the 3,000 meters. In addition to Long taking first place, Austin Whitelaw finished second (8:26.74), Jack Little finished sixht (8:33.46) and Tyler Woodrome took 11th (8:43.03).
Porter made his season debut with a first-place showing in the men's pole vault seeded division, clearing 5.06 meters (16-7.25). Ocean Walters-Carlson took fifth at 4.60 meters (15-1.00).
