Merzbacher Opens Season with Top-10 Finish

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior Chad Merzbacher shot a 73 to finish tied for seventh as he led the Tennessee golf team to an eighth place finish in the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Georgia, to open the 2015-16 season.
Merzbacher entered the final day at even par and tied for ninth. He bogeyed three early in the final round but bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 sixth hole and eagle on the par-5 12th. His Top 10 finish is the ninth in his career.
“I really just stuck to my process the whole time,” Merzbacher said. “I started off poorly, but I knew I could stick to my process and come back.”
Although Merzbacher eagled the 12th in the final round, his most impressive play this weekend came in the second round.
“I birdied 12 through 15 in the second round,” Merzbacher said. “I think that is a pretty amazing accomplishment with where those pins were. I was really in the zone.”
Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara finished tied for 27th as he shot 3-over in the final round and 10-over on the weekend. After a rough start, he found some rhythm on the back nine, getting two birdies and one eagle.
Lorenzo Scalise, Jack Smith and Michael Nagy round out the five-person team that competed for the Vols in the opening weekend. Smith shot a 75 and had two birdies on the day, while Scalise (78) and Nagy (81) both collected one birdie in the final round.
Michael Monroe, who competed as an independent participant, finished tied for 67th after shooting a 77 in the final round.

The squad will be off next weekend before heading to Nashville, Tennessee, for the DICK’S ACC/SEC Challenge Sept. 25-27.
