KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Six Tennessee track and field student-athletes were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic individual list, as announced Friday by the collegiate track and field governing body.
Tennessee's representatives on the academic list emerged almost exclusively from the throws discipline as Tavis Bailey (discus, shot put), Cameron Brown (hammer), Matthew Hoty (shot put), and Matthew Zajac (discus) made the men's list and Cassie Wertman (shot put) appeared on the women's list. Distance ace and CoSIDA Academic All-American Chelsea Blaase rounded out the list for the Volunteers.
Zajac and Bailey are the only first-time All-Academic honorees in the group. Zajac earned his honor after a strong freshman campaign while Bailey--a fifth-year senior--spent his 2014-15 season enrolled in UT's graduate school. Departing senior Hoty receives his fourth All-Academic nod in as many seasons while Brown and Wertman are each appearing on the list for the consecutive year. Blaase was also a 2014 honoree and has now appeared on the All-Academic list for back-to-back campaigns.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
- For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org
- For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
A total of 838 women and 529 men earned All-Academic honors for the 2015 season. With 99 female honorees, the SEC was the top conference on the women's side while the Big Ten took the top spot on the men's side with 68 honorees.
