ATLANTA, Ga. -- Tennessee's late charge wasn't enough as the Vols lost at Georgia Tech, 69-67, on Monday night at McCamish Pavilion.
Georgia Tech's 17-3 run in the second half proved to be too much for the Vols to overcome as Tennessee had three chances in the final 80 seconds to tie or take the lead. Devon Baulkman's 3-pointer was just long as the buzzer sounded.
The Vols (1-1) were led by Armani Moore's 17 points. Robert Hubbs III added 13 points while Jabari McGhee had a career-high 10 points. After grabbing only 33 rebounds in their opener, Tennessee corralled 53 boards led by Derek Reese (10). Four Vols had five or more rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0) were by Nick Jacobs, who had a career-high 23 points (17 in the first half). Marcus Georges-Hunt tallied 17 points while Charles Mitchell had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vols made a late charge as Moore's 3-pointer with 1:47 left in regulation cut the Jackets' lead to 69-67. Punter had a chance to tie the game at 69, but missed a pair of free throws with 1:19 left in the game. Hubbs had another chance to tie the game with 38 seconds left, but Hubbs was blocked by Georges-Hunt.
Reese grabbed his 10th and final rebound with seconds remaining to set up Baulkman's potential chance to give the Vols a win.
After a first half where neither team led by more than five points, the teams traded runs early in the second half.
Tennessee ripped off a 11 consecutive points to take a 53-44 lead on a jumper by Kevin Punter with 14:31 left in the second half. That nine-point lead was the largest of the game.
Georgia Tech answered with a 10-0 spurt minutes later to regain a 58-55 advantage on a Jacobs lay-up with 10:19 left in the second half.
Tennessee was mired in a 1-of-14 shooting drought as the Vols fell behind 65-58 on Georges-Hunt's 3-pointer with 6:47 left in the game.
The Vols trailed 40-38 at halftime as Jacobs led all scorers with 17 points, making 6-of-9 from the floor. Hubbs had nine points in the first half as neither team led by more than two possessions.
