KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat Marshall, 84-74 Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Armani Moore led the Vols with a career-high 20 points, Robert Hubbs III and Kevin Punter each scored 19, while Devon Baulkman poured in 13. The 19 points marked a new career-best for Hubbs, who has scored in double figures in all three games this season. Derek Reese had a career-best 13 rebounds to lead all players on the night.
The Volunteers trailed by three at the half, 38-35, and a 13-0 run by Marshall over the first 5:01 of the second half put Tennessee in the deep hole at home. But the Vols responded with a 26-2 run of their own to erase the deficit and then some in the victory over the Thundering Herd. Punter's jumper in the lane with 11:09 to go gave UT a lead at 54-53 that it would not relinquish.
Brett Browning and Ryan Taylor scored 18 apiece to pace Marshall.
Barnes in the Building: Tennessee last came back from a deficit of at least 16 points when the Vols rallied from 17 down against Vanderbilt (30-13) in 2011 to beat the Commodores, 67-64, on Jan. 15, 2011.
Before that, the last time Tennessee came back to win after trailing by 15 points was against a Rick Barnes-coached team. The Volunteers trailed Texas, 50-35, at the half on Dec. 23, 2006. The Vols would trail by as many as 17 in the second half, but outscored the Longhorns, 54-39, to force overtime. Tennessee prevailed in the extra period, 111-105 on the strength of 35 points from Chris Lofton.
Mostella Soars in First StartSophomore Detrick Mostella made his first start of the season and the second of his career. He hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to open the game and scored all seven of his points in the first half. Mostella also dished out a career-best three assists.
Solid at the Stripe: Tennessee knocked down its first 18 free throws in the game, finishing the night 25-of-30. 12 of those 18 came during the 26-2 run early in the second half that turned the game around. Punter hit his first nine attempts, Hubbs was 5-of-5 and Devon Baulkman 4-of-4.
