JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- Chad Merzbacher's four back-nine birdies and even par first round has him tied for 11th after Tennessee completed its first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn., Friday.

Tennessee finished with a 299 (+11) after the first round and sits in 11th place heading into the second round.

Despite shooting 2-over on the front nine, Merzbacher's three consecutive birdies on holes 13 through 15 and birdie on 17 gave him the team-high 72.

Junior Jack Smith posted a 2-over 74 and is tied for 32nd. His two birdies on the day came on the two front-nine par-3 holes--the 3rd and 7th.

Senior Michael Nagy birdied on back-to-back holes as he hit the fairway shot within two feet of the pin on the par-4 13th. He then proceeded to birdie the par-5 14th.

Freshman Nicklas Mattner made his Volunteer debut in the tournament, shooting 7-over in the round. He birdied the par-4 2nd and par-5 14th.

Lorenzo Scalise shot 6-over on the day to round out the Tennessee team scores.

Junior Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara, who is competing as an individual in this weekend's tournament, is tied for 22nd after shooting 1-over. He birdied four in the round.

The Volunteers will play alongside Furman and ETSU in the second round. Tee times for the Vols begin at 9:20 a.m. ET.
