AUGUSTA, Ga. - In the Vols' final regular season contest, the No. 23 Tennessee men's golf team combined for a 14-over par 878, finishing sixth at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club.
The Vols had to fend off some fierce competition as they faced their toughest field yet. Of the 15 teams in the Insperity Invitational field, 13 were ranked in the top-50, including two in the top-10. With the Vols' sixth place finish, Tennessee finished ahead of eight top-50 ranked teams.
In the first round Saturday morning, the Vols came out blazing hot, finishing tied for third after carding a 3-over par 291. However, the second round was not as kind for the Big Orange. Saturday afternoon's second round found the Vols sliding after carding a 9-over par 297, dropping Tennessee into a tie for seventh with Houston. On the final day, Tennessee regained their form as they shot a 2-over par 290, finishing the tournament in sixth position.
The University of Texas captured its second consecutive Insperity Augusta State Invitational title by edging out the host Augusta State by two shots. Texas, the defending national champions and highest ranked team in the field, carded a 3-under par 285 on the final day.
Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg fired a 6-under par 66 in regulation, then proceeded to outlast Central Florida's Greg Eason in an Insperity tournament-record, five-hole playoff to claim the individual championship.
For the four consecutive tournament, Tennessee was led by freshman Oliver Goss. Goss racked up his third consecutive top-5 finish by carding a 69-72-72--213 (-3), which included three birdies in his final round.
Head coach Jim Kelson's most consistent starting five finished the Insperity Invitational as follows: Jay Vandeventer finished tied for 13th after shooting a 71-75-70--216 (E), Rick Lamb finished tied for 28th after carding a 76-73-72--221 (+5), Brandon Rodgers finished tied for 65th after carding a 77-77-76--230 (+14), and Thomas Dunne finished in 74th after shooting a 75-80-85--240 (+24).
Looking ahead, the Vols return to action April 19, when they travel to Sea Island, Ga., for the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
