Tennessee's solace for losing in Monday's consolation bracket at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship round is no consolation at all.
The Vols draw perennial power Oklahoma State on Tuesday in the seventh-place match after dropping a 3-2 decision Monday to sixth-seeded Indiana.
UT's Jay Vandeventer and Rick Lamb both won for the second time this week. Vandeventer claimed the final hole with a bogey for a 1-up victory over Indiana's David Mills, while Lamb led for all but three holes in defeating Corey Ziedonis by a 2 and 1 margin.
But the Vols couldn't push any of the other three matches past 16 holes in falling to the 32nd-ranked Hoosiers.
Oklahoma State, ranked 22nd by Golfstat.com and seeded fourth in this week's 16-team field, lost like Tennessee on Monday for the second match in a row, this time to East Carolina by a score of 3½-1½. UT entered the week ranked 49th nationally by Golfstat.
Both the Vols and Cowboys are 1-2 after three rounds at The Concessions Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. Tuesday's winner earns seventh-place honors and the loser takes eighth.
Mills rallied to force another tie through 13 holes played and the pair were still tied entering play on the final hole, the 478-yard, par-4 fifth. Vandeventer made bogey but Mills could do no better than 6 and UT claimed the 1-up decision.
Vandeventer improved his record to 2-0-1 at the Collegiate Match Play.
Lamb also has two wins after he was in control for most of Monday's match. The UT junior won the first hole against Indiana's Corey Ziedonis but suddnely trailed by one after four holes played.
Lamb then proceeded to win four straight holes over Nos. 12-15 (match began on No. 8), playing them in 3 under par for a three-hole advantage. Ziedonis climbed to within one with two holes remaining, but Lamb birdied the par-3 sixth to close out the match at 2 and 1.
Lamb is 2-1 at the Collegiate Match Play.
Garrick Porteous fell behind early and never recovered in dropping a 4 and 3 decision to Indiana's Chase Wright. The Vols senior captain was four holes down after five played and drew no closer than 3-down the rest of the way.
Marshall Talkington was even through five but then stumbled and lost 3 and 2 to Indiana's David Erdy. The UT sophomore was 1-down through seven played when Erdy won three straight on Nos. 16-18 (match began on No. 9). Talkington crept within two with three to play but then bogeyed the par-3 sixth to close out the match.
Brandon Rodgers lost 3 and 2 to Indiana's Brant Peaper. Rodgers and Peaper were all square through eight holes played when the Hoosiers golfer won three straight over Nos. 15-17 (match began on No. 7). The pair then halved the next five holes to finish the match.
